24 Montara Mountain Trail... Distance: 7.5 miles round trip/2,000 foot gain Nearest spot for provisions is in Montara. Directions to Trailhead: Take Hwy 1 to Montara and park in the lot at the north end of Montara State Beach. Walk 150 yards upcoast and cross the hightway. The unsigned trail begins at a pipe gate across a fire road on the inland side of Hwy. 1. The Walk: Head up the fire road a short distance and join the trail on your left, which swings north over a seasonally flowered grassy slope. The path drops to join a dirt road, then ascends. While climbing, you'll pass 2 benches, where you can catch your breath. The dirt road eventually veers south, but you'll take a footpath up to the saddle.
